Tips for driving around large trucks

Many times, truck accidents are deadly. Sometimes, accidents are the result of the truck driver, such as one case in Texas where the trucker was under the influence of marijuana and prescription drugs, resulting in 13 fatalities.

Other times, the individual in the regular car shares some of the blame. One big reason for truck accidents is many people do not know how to safely drive around a big rig. Here are some tips for when you have to pass a large truck on the freeway.

Have enough distance when you are in front

When you are in front of a truck, you should be at least 20 feet ahead. You should also be able to clearly see the truck's front bumper. The reason you need this much distance is you may suddenly need to come to a stop. Trucks take a much longer time to fully brake, so when driving ahead, make sure you give the truck enough room to stop without hitting you.

Pass quickly on the left side

In the event you need to pass a truck, do so on the left side. You also need to drive by fairly quickly because most trucks have a large blind spot on this side. If you stay to the side for too long, then it is possible the truck will not see you if the driver attempts to shift to the left lane.

Give the truck enough distance from behind

When traveling behind the truck, you want to be extremely careful. You need to pay attention to whether the truck suddenly stops. You should never tailgate a big rig. Additionally, it is good to keep a safe distance because sometimes, large trucks kick up pieces of debris that could hit your windshield. Ultimately, you want to steer clear of all trucks on the road. Give them their distance, and quickly get away from them when you can.
