Fatal truck accident claims 13-year-old Texas teenager

Losing a child is one of the most devastating things that could ever happen to a parent. For one Texas family, this nightmare recently became a reality. The fatal truck accident involved a large gravel hauler, which struck a vehicle in the intersection of a red light. The victim may have been riding with friends.

The wreck occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m., when a 37-year-old mother was driving with at least two of her children and one other child. As she passed into the intersection, the gravel hauler T-boned the vehicle, killing a 13-year-old passenger. It is does not appear as if the victim was related to the driver, who was injured in the wreck and had to be transported to an area hospital.

The other two children in the vehicle at the time of the accident -- a 13-year-old girl and 9-year-old boy -- were also injured and at last update were listed in critical condition. Police say that the driver behind the wheel of the large gravel hauler did not suffer any injuries. At this time authorities are still investigating the accident to determine exactly who was at fault for the collision, although they have ruled out alcohol as a possible contributing factor. They currently believe that one of the drivers ran the red light.

As investigators work to determine who was at fault in this particular truck accident, the parents or other surviving family of the victim may choose to take legal action of their own. When a driver's negligence causes a fatal accident, he or she can be held responsible through the careful actions of a wrongful death claim even if the driver is never criminally charged. However, many Texas families choose to use information gathered during police investigations to support their accusations of negligence in civil court.
